"7 Tips to Protect Your Skin from the Sun this Summer"
Updated on 26 de Junho de 2023
Enjoy the arrival of warm weather while keeping up with essential skincare practices. Protect your skin and boost your health.
Moderate sun exposure stimulates the production of vitamin D, essential for various body functions. It also contributes to the production of melanin, a substance that helps prevent diseases and enhances well-being.
Sunlight can also improve our mood, lower blood pressure, strengthen our bones and muscles, and boost our immune system.
However, it's important to adopt strategies to protect your skin from the sun, avoiding excessive damage from UV rays and promoting healthy, well-cared-for skin during the summer season.
Skincare at the beach during summer
Not everyone is aware, but the sun is the primary external factor responsible for skin ageing. This happens because it emits UVA and UVB ultraviolet rays.
UVA rays are the most harmful as they penetrate deep into the skin layers, promoting the formation of free radicals—molecules that can damage collagen and elastin fibres, leading to a loss of skin firmness.
UVB rays are not entirely harmless either; their action on the skin's surface causes inflammation (sunburn).
Therefore, it's essential to adopt habits, especially during the beach season, to take care of your skin.
Check out the 7 tips to protect your skin from the sun:
- Moderate sun exposure
Prevent skin dehydration and the appearance of wrinkles or spots. Follow health recommendations.
For healthy skin, avoid direct sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- Use an appropriate sunscreen
Sunscreen not only protects against skin cancer but also against skin ageing. Applying it to your face should be a daily habit, as even on cloudy or foggy days, UVA radiation can reach the Earth's surface.
Choose a sunscreen suited to your skin type, with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply it whenever your skin is exposed to the sun, ideally every two hours.
The amount of product applied also matters: studies show that using a small amount can reduce the effectiveness of the protection.
Remember, the recommended amount for the face is equivalent to the amount applied on your index and middle fingers.
- Wear a hat and sunglasses
During sun exposure, wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your skin, especially since facial skin is so delicate! Direct sunlight can stimulate the formation of fine lines and spots.
Use sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection, as these rays can also damage your eyes.
- Choose suitable clothing for the season
For comfort, wear light, fresh, and loose-fitting clothing. If you have circulation issues, avoid tight clothes, particularly on hot days.
- Drink plenty of fluids
Hydrate your body, and your skin will thank you. In hot weather, increase your fluid intake throughout the day. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, drink water or herbal teas without sugar.
It's also common for our body to retain more fluids during this time of year. Reducing salt intake and opting for lymphatic drainage massages can help reduce swelling.
- Eat foods that purify the body
For beautiful skin, a healthy diet is essential. Opt for organic foods and minimize refined sugars.
